European Union | Council of the EU: 18-month Presidency Trio, with Ireland, Lithuania, and Greece

Each of these countries will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU for six months, jointly leading the legislative agenda until December 2027.

The Council of the European Union has entered a new 18-month Presidency Trio, with Ireland, Lithuania, and Greece leading the legislative agenda until December 2027. Their joint programme reframes health policy as a core pillar of economic competitiveness and security, introducing key changes for European healthcare.

The trio plans to reinforce health security and health system resilience, with a focus on preparedness, prevention and public health protection, including mental health. It also identifies strengthening resilience and preparedness for health emergencies as part of a broader all-hazards approach.

The programme also foresees further development of the European Health Union, including action to strengthen medical devices and health-related biotechnology ecosystems and to harmonise clinical trial procedures. In addition, the trio plans to reinforce healthcare systems and health and social resilience, while promoting digitalisation and the appropriate use of artificial intelligence in health.

The programme further highlights the importance of a healthy population and improved quality of life as contributors to a healthy European economy, alongside investment in research and innovation in areas including life sciences.

The Europe Region will continue to monitor the policy initiatives throughout the current Trio mandate to ensure the interests of European physiotherapists are represented.
